We
are looking forward to a successful and happy school year for you and
your child. To start the year off, we felt it would be helpful to both
you and your child to have an idea of the philosophy, goals, expectations
and routines of the third grade E.F.L. Program. |

| Philosophy | ||

The Extended Foreign Language Program is based on the philosophy of the transfer of skills from one language to another. The subject area skills and concepts acquired in one language are applied in the other language. |
|
| Grades | ||
| GRADES will be given in each subject weekly. Tests for the different subject areas are given throughout the week. These graded papers will not be sent home, however, they are on file in the classroom for your inspection | ||

Classroom Rules | |

Follow directions the first time they are given. |
||
| Homework | ||
HOMEWORK
will be assigned Monday through Friday. In the past, we have experienced
some difficulties with students forgetting their homework. We recommend
that you inquire each day about the assigned work. If your child stated
that he/she has completed it, please, ask to see his/her assignment.
Not only does this assure you that the homework is truly complete, it
also builds a positive scholastic attitude when students feel their
parents take an interested in their academic accomplishments. |
||
| Goals | ||
The
participating student will have achieved as much in the way of skills,
abilities, and understandings as would have been achieved by attending
a monolingual class. The student will be able to function in either
culture easily and comfortably. The student will have pride in his or
her own heritage and respect and appreciation of different people and
cultures. The student's proficiency in listening, speaking, reading,
and writing in his or her second language will approximate that of the
first language. The E.F.L. Program aims towards 60% of instruction in
English and a 40% of instruction in Spanish. |
||
| Multiplication tables | ||
| MULTIPLICATION TABLES MUST BE MASTERED IN THIRD GRADE. It takes a good deal of practice and review to memorize the multiplication facts and it is an excellent activity for parents interested in working with their children at home. We encourage you to purchase multiplication flash cards and plan a time each day for your child to practice at home. | ||
| Absences and Tardiness | ||
It
is a school policy that you send a note with your child explaining the
reason for his/her absence, the day he/she returns to school. After
3 consecutive absences a doctor's note must accompany the child the
day he/she returns to class. It is also required to have a note for
tardiness. Your cooperation is appreciated, since unexcused absences
and tardies can hinder your child's grades and /or progress in school.

At any time during the school year that you have any questions relating to your child and his/her progress, please do not hesitate to contact us. Effective home-school communication eliminates many otherwise potential problems. | ||
