Dear Parents and Staff,

Welcome to the Student Services Website.  We hope everyone is ready for an exciting school year.  This year once again Mrs. Fernandez will be working with the primary grades (Pre-K through 2) and Mrs. McGlynn will focus on the intermediate grades (3-5).  We also have the additional support of our social worker, Kristen Arocha, who has been a wonderful addition to our Student Services Team.   If you have any concerns about any of your students or need our assistance in parent conferences or any other situations please feel free to come to one of us.

We will be working together on many activities this school year including Red Ribbon Week, Career Day, Turkey Drive, Salvation Army Canned Food Drive, Toy Drive, Outside Agency Referrals and general conferences.  We will also have our own responsibilities.

Mrs. McGlynn will continue to ask for nominations each month for Do the Right Thing.  Thank you to all the teachers that take the time to recognize their students every month.  Mrs. McGlynn will also be involved in the SST process along with Mrs. Arocha, Mrs. Schneider, our new psychologist, Rita Barrios and Ivette Garcia.

Mrs. Fernandez will be in charge of the LEP committee meetings.  These meetings will involve Mrs. Schneider, an ESOL dept. teacher, Mrs. Fernandez, the homeroom teacher and in some cases special area teachers may be asked to attend as well.    Mrs. Fernandez will be in charge of the Character Education forms each month.  These students will also be recognized in our web site and receive a special certificate.

Mrs. Fernandez will be involved in the Staffings with our new Staffing Specialist, Karen Embden.  She will also now be in charge of the Gifted Program.

Mrs. Fernandez and Mrs. Arocha will be working with Mrs. Schneider on attendance issues.  We have different attendance incentives to keep our students motivated in coming to school.  We have the spelling out PERFECT ATTENDANCE program.  When a class spells out PERFECT ATTENDANCE the class will be rewarded with an incentive of their choice.  This year so far we have had classes participate in pajama day and sports day.  Students that have Perfect Attendance for an entire month will be rewarded with a movie on a Wednesday in our new Media Center.

Mrs. McGlynn will be in charge of scheduling EPIPEN Trainings.  If you have a child with severe allergy problems, please let her know so that she can follow up with appropriate measures.  We will both be working with the vision and hearing screenings.  Once we get our referrals from the vision screenings, we will be recommending these students to the Bruce Heiken – Instant Vision Program.

As far as Classroom Guidance Lessons are concerned, Mrs. Fernandez plans to be coming out to the Primary grades sometime in the coming months to conduct classroom guidance lessons.   Mrs. McGlynn will continue to work with 3rd grade and the KAPOW Program as well as bring in speakers to conduct health related presentations with second through fifth grade students.  In addition to these presentations she also plans to conduct classroom and small group lessons focusing on bullying, study skills and career education.

Finally, last but not least, throughout the year, Mrs. Fernandez, Nina Hernandez and Mrs. McGlynn will be setting up some workshops for the parents.  We are planning on scheduling one early in the year on ADHD.  We will send out more information when we have selected a date.  Once our flyers go home to the parents, please attend because they are going to be very informative.  Please refer to the student services calendar for upcoming events.   If you have any questions or concerns about anything, please come and see us.  We will be glad to assist you in any way that we can.

Sincerely,

Sandra McGlynn, Jennifer Fernandez, Kristen Arocha and Rita Barrios
